• The history of the Macarthur region is a rich and fruitful one, the valleys bountiful and particularly well-suited to farming. Legend claims that a settler, having lost six heads of cattle on the land, returned two years later to find the original six had become sixty. The local indigenous people, the Dharawal, saw these cattle and sketched them into cave walls by the Georges River, the “Bull Caves”. The original settler’s home can still be seen at nearby Belgenny Farm.

The Macarthur area was also home to Australia’s first commercial vineyard, an industry that extends through to today with the area’s number of boutique wineries. The area’s strong agricultural traditional also covers wheat and dairy farming and merino wool-growing.

  • Connection to the origins of the area still exist with many historic buildings being restored and farmers markets such as the Cobbity Markets remind us of the foundations of the area with many traders being generational farmers.

Once known as Catherine Fields the area is no longer the farming hamlet of the 1800s.
